What is domestic abuse?

There is no specific offence of domestic abuse or domestic violence and the term is used to encompass a range of violent offences that are alleged to have taken place between two people who are personally connected. They include but are not limited to:

  • economic abuse
  • psychological, emotional or other abuse
  • Honour based violence and arranged marriage


The allegations in cases of a domestic nature often span over a period of time, and the parties are likely to have been together for a number of years by the time the abuse is reported to the police however, this is not a necessity and domestic abuse can occur as a result of a single incident, even where the parties do not live together.
